Gattuso: "We're playing well but we must improve our mentality"
Gennaro Gattuso has called on his side to develop an even stronger mindset if they are to prove they are on a par with the teams above them.
Speaking after the Azzurri's 2-1 win over Genoa, the boss said: "We're playing well and I'm happy with the lads but we need an even better mentality. This team has got fantastic potential so it doesn't surprise me when we play well. What does surprise me is the fact we're 12 points off fourth place.
"I thought we were really good again today but there were spells when we let our focus slip – and we mustn't do that. We have to be better mentally if we want to move up to the next level.
“The league table is a reminder of the fact that we need to improve. We have some highly talented players in this squad and others who can only get better. We shouldn't be this far behind Atalanta, even if they are an excellent side.
"If we want to get into the sort of position this team should be in, we need to work hard and make sure we become even stronger in future. Skill in itself won't get you anywhere. Lots of factors come into play in football – you need both physical and mental attributes.”
