GATTUSO: "I'M ANGRY, WE TOOK TOO MANY RISKS"

Gennaro Gattuso was far from satisfied with despite Napoli’s 2-1 win over Rijeka in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

“We took too many risks, I’m angry. We knew beforehand that we were up against a very tough side, but despite what I said to the players before the game, I didn’t like our approach at all.

“We didn’t play well in the first half an hour. I don’t know why. We seemed to be off the boil and it took us some time to wake up. It’s probably my fault. I didn’t manage to get the players to focus in the right way, but I reiterate the fact that I’m angry about that attitude.

“We upped the pace in the second half and deserved the win in the end, but we can’t allow ourselves to go through such highs and lows. This is a problem that this team has faced for a while, even before I took over, and we need to resolve it.

“When a game is going badly, you don’t always manage to turn it around in the way that we did tonight. We certainly did well to react and the players deserve credit for that, but I expect much more in many areas.

“We have to perform with consistency because the potential is there. We need to develop mentally and in terms of our character. We have fantastic quality, but it must always be accompanied by the right mentality.”
