FAZIO: “THE EUROPA LEAGUE CAN BE VERY IMPORTANT FOR US”

Federico Fazio knows Roma will be in for a tough encounter when they begin their Europa League campaign against Viktoria Plzen on Thursday.

Fazio, a multiple winner of the competition during his time with Sevilla, knows exactly what it takes to progress a long way in the UEFA tournament - and believes the incentive is there for the Giallorossi to do as well as they possibly can this season.

The Argentine knows Plzen will not make it easy for them to get off to a good start, however.
"It's a massive tournament because the winner qualifies for next year's Champions League, so for this reason it's important to do well," Fazio said. "We have to start well in tomorrow's game and keep the standard high for 90 minutes."We need to fight for the whole game in order to win and get this cycle of matches bunched together off to a good start."

What are your thoughts on Viktoria Plzen?
"This competition is a big thing for this team, so is tomorrow's match. Facing Roma will give them a lot of motivation. We have to impose our own style on the game from the outset in order to get the three points."

How are you physically and are you satisfied with how things have started at Roma for you?
"Yes, I feel good fitness-wise. I'm happy with my first few months in Italy and at Roma. We've got a competitive squad, my team-mates treat me well and I get on with them. I'm trying to make myself speak Italian too, I have to keep working at it."

Roma have found it tough in defence recently, what needs to be improved?
"It doesn't depend solely on the defence. We have to work as a team in all areas, from defence right through until attack. There are 11 players on the pitch and we are working hard at playing together as a unit."

What has the coach asked of you ahead of the encounter against Viktoria Plzen?
"We are working hard and, as I said, the most important thing is to start with a win. It's vital to begin on the right foot in a competition I hope to win."
